Who We Are – Our Personnel

Tom Kroeger - Director

Optimum Reading's director is Tom Kroeger. Tom spent over 30 years as a certified reading teacher for the Wayne-Westland Community School District, in the Metropolitan Detroit area. He holds a Master of Arts in Reading from Eastern Michigan University. He has worked toward improving literacy with the North Central Association, both as a building chair person and as a visiting team member. Tom is a member of both the Michigan Reading Association and the International Reading Association.

Gail Witt - Certified Reading Specialist

Gail Witt is a Michigan K-12 Certified Reading Specialist who has been tutoring children and adults for over 35 years. In addition to increasing reading levels and comprehension, her students also become proficient in critical thinking, writing and study skills. As a classroom teacher and learning specialist, she has over 28 years of experience in assessing and implementing individual learning styles, focusing on creating independent readers, writers and learners. Clients ranging from third grade through doctoral candidates have benefited from her individualized education and editing programs.

What We Are – Our Motivation

As a certified reading teacher, I spent over 30 years working to help ALL my students to read better. Given the ever-increasing needs of today's workplace, it is important to raise the level of literacy for all students, not just those having difficulty. Unfortunately the recent changes in education have actually cut into the elective reading classes, often eliminating them totally.

In 2004, I left teaching to start Optimum Reading, a business dedicated to improving the reading skills and fluency of children, adolescents, and adults. I have selected what I believe to be the best combination of assessments, programs, and technology available. Our online programs have proven to cause an average improvement of 1.8 grade levels, and the improvement in visual efficiency is usually well above that! These are great programs, and I am pleased to be able to provide this opportunity to people.

Homeschool Help

We are a local homeschooling family. My 14-year old was reading slowly, which was frustrating with the amount of work she needed to get through. As homeschoolers, when we run into a problem with one of our children, it can be frustrating knowing where to go for help. We found this great on-line program at a company called Optimum Reading. In four months, our daughter; doubled her speed, and went up three grade levels in reading comprehension. We have tried other things, but this really worked!
Mr. Kroeger, Director of Optimum Reading, was great. He showed us how to use the Reading Plus Online package at the first visit. Then our daughter would use the program as a part of her homeschooling work. Mr. Kroeger was very nice to work with, kept in constant touch, and monitored my daughter’s progress and helped us along the way.
